Timber playground canopies
A timber playground canopy uses an engineered glulam frame instead of steel. It brings a natural, warmer aesthetic that suits early-years gardens, forest-school areas and park settings where a green backdrop calls for wood rather than metal.

What is a timber playground canopy?
A timber playground canopy is a permanent engineered-timber (glulam) structure roofed with impact-resistant UV-filtering polycarbonate, installed over a school, nursery or park play area to give year-round shade and rain shelter. It is the natural-look specification within our range of playground canopies, chosen where a warmer, softer frame suits the setting.
Glued-laminated timber posts and beams are engineered like structural steel but read as natural wood, so a timber playground canopy sits softly in early-years gardens, forest-school areas and green public spaces. The roof runs off to a controlled edge, and the timber is factory-treated for outdoor durability.
- Frame: engineered glulam timber, factory-treated for outdoor durability.
- Roof: impact-resistant polycarbonate that filters roughly 99% of UV.
- Look: natural, warm and low-visual-impact, suited to green and early-years settings.
Steel or timber playground canopy — which should we choose?
Choose a timber playground canopy for a natural glulam look that suits early-years gardens, forest-school areas and parks; choose steel playground canopies for the longest maintenance-free life, the widest clear spans and any RAL or school colour. Timber is the aesthetic specification; steel is the workhorse.
A timber frame sits more softly in a green setting but needs occasional inspection and re-treatment, while powder-coated steel is close to maintenance-free and carries bigger spans. Both are engineered to the same structural Eurocodes, so the honest decision is about look, setting and upkeep rather than safety.
| Timber (glulam) | Steel | |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | Long-lived when re-treated on schedule | Longest maintenance-free life |
| Maintenance | Periodic inspection and re-treatment | Close to maintenance-free |
| Cost | Comparable; varies with span and finish | Efficient across the widest spans |
| Aesthetic | Natural, warm, low visual impact | Clean, any RAL or school colour |
Both frames are engineered to the structural Eurocodes and roofed in the same polycarbonate; the choice is look, setting and upkeep, not strength. This table is answered reciprocally on the steel playground canopies page.
Does a timber playground canopy need more maintenance than steel?
A timber playground canopy does need a little more upkeep than steel: the glulam frame is factory-treated but benefits from periodic inspection and re-treatment to keep it weathering evenly, whereas a powder-coated steel frame is close to maintenance-free. Neither is onerous, and we set out the schedule with your handover.
- Inspect: a straightforward visual check for weathering, fixings and drainage.
- Re-treat: periodic re-coating keeps the timber protected and looking natural.
- Roof: the polycarbonate roof is impact-resistant and needs only occasional cleaning, the same as on a steel canopy.
How much does a timber playground canopy cost?
A timber playground canopy is quoted to your project rather than sold at a list price, because the cost is driven by the span, the height, the roof specification, the groundworks and the fixing. We survey the site, then return a design, a specification and a firm price with no obligation.
The biggest cost movers are the covered area and clear span (more glulam and bigger foundations), the roof glazing, ground conditions and access, and the timber finish and any extras such as guttering and downpipes. For a like-for-like comparison, an equivalent steel-framed playground canopy will price differently again.
Is a timber playground canopy as strong as steel?
A timber playground canopy is engineered to carry the same wind and snow loads as a steel one: glulam is a structural material designed to BS EN 1995 (Eurocode 5), so a timber frame is sized with proper load calculations, not chosen at the expense of strength. Steel simply reaches wider clear spans on fewer, slimmer columns.
Where a very wide column-free span is the priority, steel or a large-span tensile fabric canopy may suit better; where the look matters most and spans are moderate, timber carries the load comfortably. We size every frame to the site before we quote.
Where does a timber playground canopy work best?
A timber playground canopy works best where a natural frame suits the setting: over early-years canopies free-flow areas for under-5s, across forest-school and nature zones, in outdoor classrooms, and in councils, parks and play areas where a green public space calls for a softer material than steel.
In an early-years or nursery garden the warm timber and low, safe lines read as part of the landscape, and in a park a glulam frame sits more quietly than powder-coated steel. It also pairs well with a natural planting scheme and timber play equipment.
What safety standards apply to a timber playground canopy?
The canopy structure is engineered to the structural Eurocodes — BS EN 1991 for wind and snow loads, BS EN 1995 for the timber (glulam) — with load calculations, and installed under CDM 2015. It is designed and fitted to serve primary and secondary schools and councils, parks and play areas alike.
Note that BS EN 1176 governs the play equipment and impact surfacing a canopy shelters, not the shelter structure itself, so we never claim the canopy “complies with BS EN 1176”. Our installers are DBS-checked for work on a live school site.

Timber playground canopies questions
How long does a timber playground canopy last?
An engineered glulam timber playground canopy is built for many years of service when it is inspected and re-treated on schedule; the polycarbonate roof is impact-resistant. We set out the maintenance schedule and confirm the warranty on the frame and roof with your quotation.
Can a timber playground canopy be installed during term time?
Yes. We plan the works around the school day and, where a project needs it, work in the school holidays, with our own installation teams and site segregation from pupils. We agree the programme once the design is signed off.
Can the timber be left natural or does it have to be coloured?
The glulam frame is treated to weather naturally, keeping the warm timber look most early-years and park settings want; the polycarbonate roof is specified separately, clear for brightness or opal to diffuse the light. We confirm the finish with your design.
