What is a tensile fabric canopy?
A tensile fabric canopy is a large-span shelter formed from a tensioned architectural membrane — PVC-coated polyester or PTFE-coated glass — stretched taut over a steel frame and cables, roofing a play area, MUGA or public space in a single sculptural sweep. It is one of the playground canopies we build, chosen where a wide, column-free span matters.
The membrane carries its load in tension rather than bending, so a tensile fabric canopy covers a very large area on few supports, curves into double-curved “saddle” or conic forms, and reads as a landmark rather than a plain roof. The frame is galvanised, powder-coated steel; the fabric is the roof, translucent enough to keep the space bright underneath.

How large a span can a tensile fabric canopy cover, compared with steel?
A tensile fabric canopy covers larger clear spans than a conventional steel-and-polycarbonate canopy, because the tensioned membrane carries load without the deep beams a rigid roof needs, so it shelters a full MUGA or a wide gathering space on a handful of masts. Where the span is more modest, a steel playground canopy is the simpler, more economical choice.
The rule of thumb: pick fabric when you need a wide, open, column-free area — a covered MUGA, a plaza or a large play space — and pick steel when a straight or curved polycarbonate roof over a normal playground footprint does the job. Both are engineered to the same structural standards; the difference is span, form and cost.

How long does the membrane last — PVC or PTFE?
A tensile fabric canopy is roofed in one of two architectural membranes: PVC-coated polyester, the value option with a long service life, or PTFE-coated glass fibre, the premium membrane that stays cleaner and lasts far longer. Both are tensioned, weatherproof and translucent; the choice trades upfront cost against lifespan and appearance over decades.
PVC-coated polyester is lighter, lower cost and widely used for school and community canopies, with a lacquer topcoat that keeps it clean. PTFE-coated glass is more expensive and used on the most permanent, landmark structures, where its inertness and self-cleaning surface justify the outlay. How much does a tensile fabric canopy cost?
A tensile fabric canopy is quoted to your project rather than sold at a list price, because the cost is driven by the covered span, the membrane grade, the mast and cable engineering, the foundations and the site access. We survey the site, engineer the form and return a design, a specification and a firm price with no obligation.
The biggest cost movers are the covered area and clear span (larger membranes need bigger masts and foundations), the choice of PVC or PTFE membrane, ground conditions and access for the crane and rigging, and any lighting or drainage integrated into the structure. A conventional steel playground canopy will price differently again for a comparable footprint.

A tensile fabric canopy suits large, open, publicly used spaces where a single sculptural roof adds shelter and identity — a covered MUGA, a park gathering space, a civic plaza or a school’s central social area. It is a favourite specification for councils, parks and play areas, where scale, appearance and a landmark presence all matter.

What standards apply to a tensile fabric canopy?
The tensile fabric canopy structure is engineered to the structural Eurocodes — BS EN 1991 for wind and snow loads, BS EN 1993 for the steelwork — with membrane and cable design to BS EN 13782 for tensile and temporary membrane structures where relevant, and installed under CDM 2015. It is designed and fitted to serve councils, parks and play areas and school sites alike.
Note that BS EN 1176 governs the play equipment and impact surfacing a canopy shelters, not the shelter structure itself, so we never claim the canopy “complies with BS EN 1176”. Membrane fire performance and structural warranties are confirmed on the specification, and our installers are DBS-checked for work on a live school or public site.

Is a tensile fabric canopy waterproof?
Yes. Architectural PVC-coated polyester and PTFE-coated glass membranes are fully weatherproof and tensioned to shed rain to designed drainage points, so a tensile fabric canopy keeps the space dry as well as shaded. We design the fall and drainage into the form for your site.
Can the membrane be a specific colour?
Membranes come in a range of colours and translucencies, and the steel masts and edge steel are powder-coated to any RAL or scheme colour, so a tensile fabric canopy can match a civic palette or a school’s branding. We confirm the membrane finish and frame colour with your design.
